Subject: Data Analysis of Pollution Reduction Device (R-2 Unit)

Methodology: A device that was developed by Slim Spurling, Bill Ried and Bob Dratch
was tested to determine if it reduced air ozone, carbon monoxide and to determine
if it decreased particles in the air. Greg Orton monitored the device and recorded
the time in a log book when he turned it off and on.

Location: The testing was done in Fort Collins, CO.

Time of Testing: September, October and November of 1995.

Data Collection: The City of Fort Collins supplied the hourly levels of ozone,
          carbon monoxide and air visibility

Results: September 1995

Protocol: The device was turned on at 8:00 a.m. and turned off at 8:00 a.m.
the following day. It was left off for 24 hours and turned on again at 8:00 a.m.
This was the general protocol for September.

Hours on: 371
Hours off: 330

Carbon Monoxide levels in the on setting: 3101/371 = 8.39 average
Carbon Monoxide levels in the off setting: 3002/330 = 9.10 average

8.5% less carbon monoxide in the on position.

Ozone levels in the on position: 6712/371 = 18.09
Ozone levels in the off position: 6597/330 = 19.99

10.5% less ozone in the on position.

Transmiometer Reading (Trans Avg = TA) (measures extinction and absorption)

Hours on: 300
Hours off: 277

Ozone in on position: 4017/309 = 13
Ozone in off position: 7980/424 = 18.82

44.8% more ozone in the off position.

Results: November 1995

Protocol: In November the device was turned on at 8:00 p.m. and turned off at
7:00 a.m. Again, the November results are not well controlled regarding
time of day and therefore not reliable to determine the effectiveness of the device

On: 356 hours
Off: 314 hours

Carbon monoxide levels in on position: 3271/356 = 9.19 average
Carbon monoxide levels in off position: 3885/309 = 12.39 average

34.6% more carbon monoxide in off position.

On: 343 hours
Off: 309 hours

Ozone levels in on position: 3068/343 = 8.94 average
Ozone levels in off position: 4504/309 = 14.58 average

63.1% more ozone in off position.

Overall comments: The study does show a trend but needs to be expanded to a large level.
Future studies should be better controlled regarding day time and night time.
There may be errors in addition.

TA levels in the on position: 71,487/300 = 238.3
TA levels in the off position: 80,137/277 = 289.3

21.4% higher reading in the off position.

Transmiometer Sigma Reading (TS) - indicates variation for wind.

TS levels in the on position: 3269.9/300 = 10.89
TS levels in the off position: 2397.2/277 = 8.7

20.1% less in the off position. This means there was less variation of wind in the off position.

Corr B-ext - Corrects for wind and humidity. This is a more reliable figure for measuring gas and particles than TA.

On 282 hours.
Off 281 hours.

Corr- ext levels in on position: 42.45/282 = 0.15
Corr- ext levels in off position: 23.38/281 = 0.08

47% less in off position. Water vapor increased.

Summary in September: Carbon monoxide and ozone were higher in off position. Corr B-ext factor was           lower in off position. Statistical analysis was not performed to determinie if these results were           scientifically significant.

Results: October 1995

Protocol: Generally the device was turned on at 8:00 pm and turned off at 8:00 am each           day. One would expect higher pollution during the day. The device was off during the day           and on during the night. It would be difficult to determine if pollution differences was           attributed to the device.

On: 309 hours
Off: 423 hours

Carbon monoxide in on position: 2968/309 = 9.61
Carbon monoxide in off position: 4396/423 = 10.39

8.1% more carbon monoxide in off position.
